Building ASRS Readiness Across Australia and New Zealand

Situation:

Bridgestone Australia and New Zealand operates across manufacturing, tyre import, logistics, tyre fitment and vehicle operations in both countries. Since 2020, sustainability has been firmly embedded into how the organisation makes decisions, guided by Bridgestone’s E8 Commitment.

As part of its sustainability journey, Bridgestone undertook materiality assessments followed by a carbon footprint study. This work provided an initial understanding of where emissions were generated across the business and highlighted the need to continue tracking emissions on a year-on-year basis.

 

Task:

Tracking emissions across Australia and New Zealand presented challenges driven by the scale and structure of Bridgestone ANZ’s operations.

Emissions data was sourced from a wide range of internal and external sources, arrived in different formats, and followed different workflows across teams and sites. Different emissions factors were required for Australia and New Zealand, adding further complexity to data collection and validation.

Maintaining ongoing emissions tracking placed increasing pressure on internal resources, particularly as Bridgestone began preparing for climate-related reporting requirements, including the Australian Sustainability Reporting Standards (ASRS).

The task was to establish a structured and scalable approach to emissions data management that would support year-round tracking, provide confidence in Scope 1 and Scope 2 calculations, and enable timely access to emissions information.

 

Action:

Bridgestone engaged Trellis to support the capture, consolidation and management of emissions data across Australia and New Zealand.

Trellis enabled emissions data from across the business to be brought into a single platform, providing visibility of emissions performance at any point in time. Data was input throughout the year rather than collected only at reporting periods, supporting consistent and repeatable tracking.

 

Trellis platform also enabled emissions information to be shared across teams, with procurement, facilities and production contributing data and accessing insights to support decision-making. This approach supported both internal use and preparation for upcoming ASRS reporting requirements.

 

Result:

Trellis has played an important role in supporting Bridgestone Australia and New Zealand’s preparation for ASRS climate-related reporting, including the development of Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon emissions calculations.

With emissions data consolidated and accessible, Bridgestone Australia and New Zealand now has improved visibility of its emissions position and can respond more efficiently to internal, customer and stakeholder requests for information.

This visibility has led to the analysis of Scope 3 data within Trellis, and recently identified unusually high waste expenditure at several smaller sites. This enabled the team to investigate waste collection practices and take corrective action, an outcome that would not have occurred without consolidated emissions data.

Emissions data captured in Trellis is now used across multiple departments, supporting operational decision-making and helping identify opportunities for emissions reduction projects over time.
